About the Event
Folio: The Seattle Athenaeum is thrilled to welcome Irish writer and documentary-maker Manchán Magan for an evening of Arán & Im (Bread & Butter), a theatrical piece offering insights into the wonders of the Irish language, exploring potent words of landscape, terms of intuition and insight, and the many phrases that bring to life the mysterious glory of our natural world. Arán & Im is a celebration of language, land and local Irish food. Knowledge of Irish is not required.
Manchán Magan is a writer and documentary-maker. He has written books on his travels in Africa, India and South America and two novels. He writes occasionally for The Irish Times on culture & travel, presents the RTÉ podcast The Almanac of Ireland, and is author of the award-winning, best-selling Thirty-Two Words For Field (Gill, 2000), and Listen to the Land Speak (Gill, 2022). His illustrated books include Tree Dogs, Banshees Fingers and other Irish Words for Nature. (Gill, 2021) and Wolf-men and Water Hounds (Gill, 2023). He has made dozens of documentaries on issues of world culture for TG4, RTÉ & Travel Channel. He lives in an oak wood, with bees and hens, in a grass-roofed house near Lough Lene, Co Westmeath.
