Folio: The Seattle Athenaeum invites you to explore the art of memoir with Oregon writer, activist and teacher Martha Gies.
From her new memoir, Broken Open, Gies will read the essay on Raymond Carver with whom she studied at two Centrum summer workshops. After the reading, Gies will discuss issues regarding memoir, which she frequently taught over a 34-year teaching career: the differences between autobiography and memoir, ethical considerations, family dynamics, how to begin, selecting a format, etc. A hand-out will list memoirs she admires, along a few useful books and websites. Come with your own questions!
